The Tour of Britain is the UK's biggest professional bicycle race and a centrepiece of the British sporting calendar, attracting over a million spectators to the roadside and hundreds of thousands more on television and via the Internet.
The Tour has quickly established itself as the main event in the British cycling calendar. Ranked at the 2.1 category by the UCI (International Cycling Union), the Tour of Britain takes place over eight days and nine stages, with the inclusion of an individual time trial in central London on the final day of the race.
Every year some of the world's top cyclists compete on British roads for the right to wear the yellow jersey. Over the past five years, Olympic, World and Commonwealth Champions have ridden The Tour of Britain, alongside stage and jersey winners from all three Grand Tours.
Britain's biggest professional cycle race, and the UK's largest free-to-spectate live sporting event, begins in Peebles in the Scottish Borders on Sunday the 11th of September and ends in London on Sunday the 18th of September with an iconic finish at Whitehall.
Along the way The Tour visits the North West, Wales, Staffordshire, Devon, Somerset and East Anglia. For all the latest news and updates on the Tour of Britain click here.
The Halfords Tour Series is a partner event of the Tour of Britain, which was held over eight stages and started in Durham on the 24th of May. The Tour also visited Aberystwyth, Peterborough, Colchester, Stoke-on-Trent, Oldham and Woking, finally coming to a conclusion at Canary Wharf, London on 16th June.
Ten teams once again battled over the eight rounds for the right to be crowned champions, and the best team in Britain.
Among them were Tour of Britain teams Endura Racing, Motorpoint Pro Cycling, Rapha Condor Sharp, Sigma Sport – Specialised and Team Raleigh bringing the likes of Olympic Gold Medallist Ed Clancy and former World Champion Rob Hayles to battle it out on your streets.
Following the success of the Horizon Fitness Women's Grand Prix in Stoke-on-Trent last year, Britain's top female cyclists also get a Series of their own this year, with the Johnson Health Tech Women's Grand Prix Series featuring at four of the rounds in 2011.
After their early round dominance wore off, Rapha Condor Sharp finally did enough to clinch their much sought after Halfords Tour Series title at Canary Wharf in the final round of the 2011 Series. Having come third overall for each of the past two seasons of the unique team based Series, the men of John Herety's team finally came good, to take a popular and hard fought victory.
