The growing importance of SharePoint is a major part of Microsoft's latest products.
This is according to Michael Silver, research vice-president and analyst for Garter, who made the comment in relation to Office 2010, reported processor.com.
He told the website: "Most organisations do not want their data living in Microsoft's cloud. The really big change with Office 2010 is the increasing importance of SharePoint Server.
"For both simultaneous collaboration and the Web version, SharePoint is required. This is the first version of Office that requires SharePoint to use all the Office features."
Mr Silver added that Office 2010 will offer numerous hosting options for users, going on to say that those wishing to head to the cloud can try new scaled-back online versions of programs such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
Recently, Dan Holme, writing for WindowsITPro, praised SharePoint for its content management and document storage abilities.
