The rise of software as a service (SaaS) solutions means that businesses of all sizes are able to take advantage of the benefits of enterprise resource planning (ERP), it has been claimed.
While many companies are continuing to tighten their belts as a result of the economic downturn, the National Computing Centre (NCC) has urged IT managers not to ignore ERP, arguing that if they do, they run the risk of falling behind their rivals in the long-run.
According to research carried out by the NCC, 58 per cent of businesses may consider a SaaS model for their ERP in the future, with six per cent of those polled in the study revealing that they have already done so.
Explaining the advantages, the organisation's director of advisory services said: "The development of ERP as software as a service [SaaS] will enable organisations to reduce set-up costs and adopt a pay-as-you-go model."
The NCC's own research also revealed that, at present, around one in four businesses are placing ERP schemes on hold as a result of the economic climate.
