Mobile broadband investment set to increase

A new study has shown how investment into mobile broadband infrastructure is set to increase over the next few years.

Research by iSuppli has found that global capital spending on wireless infrastructure equipment is set to be $40.3 billion (£25.8 billion) in 2011, up by 6.7 per cent on 2010.

This would represent a reversal of the downward trend in expenditure on mobile broadband that has been seen since 2009.

Dr Jagdish Rebello, senior director and principal analyst for wireless research at iSuppli, said: "The upturn in 2011 signals renewed commitment within the wireless industry to move on expansion plans that had been delayed or put on hold because of the global recession.

"Starting in 2011, wireless carriers in industrialised countries will start to deploy 4G in order to attain faster speeds and to unclog the heavy data traffic generated by the exploding use of smart phones."

Meanwhile, the British government recently suggested that new mobile spectrum should be sold off as soon as possible to support the increasing number of devices that rely on mobile broadband.ADNFCR-1370-ID-19912573-ADNFCR
