Businesses should examine their storage and archiving systems, an industry expert claimed.
Jim Elkin, a consultant at Analysys Mason, suggested that firms should take this route ahead of any storage changes.
He said: "IT departments should assess their current storage, archiving and retrieval systems in preparation for any sudden uplifts in storage, and, if necessary, set plans that allow for the strategic implementation of new storage technologies within the business."
Mr Elkin also commented that any system which provides an interface between the company and their consumers should be updated and optimised.
He explained that revamping these parts of their IT department, which could include employing exchange server experts to handle some areas of IT, may boost a company's return on investment.
These comments come shortly after a report by Gartner claimed that IT-based changes will be key for firms next year.
