| Smartphones equipped with near field communications (NFC) technology will witness increased popularity this year, new predictions show.
According to a study conducted by market research and consultancy firm IMS Research, global shipments of NFC-enabled smartphones are expected to reach 80 million units over the course of this year.
In 2011, the number of NFC-enabled smartphones shipped totalled 35 million, a figure that was boosted by rising popularity of the technology in the Japanese market.
As major mobile phone manufacturers such as Samsung, LG and Motorola increasingly enter the NFC market, the technology is expected to become even more popular.
Dan Tait, an analyst at IMS Research, said: "After seven or so years of false dawns and frequent disappointment, 2011 has proved to be something of a breakthrough year.
"Most of the leading cellular handset manufacturers have lunched NFC-enabled handsets over the last 12 months. These include Samsung, Research In Motion, Nokia and HTC."
NFC technology will be made available to smartphone users at the Olympic Park during this year's London Olympic Games.
